Why MagicJack Fails for Business VoIP

| | Comments (0)

It claims to be the fastest growing phone company in the U.S. but I don't recommend it for business. After it crashed during my latest interview (you'll see the story next Wednesday), I decided to contact help and ask for a solution to the problem. I expected little because MagicJack gets a failing grade for support from Broadband Reports' GBU rankings.

Here's the chat transcript.

Cartman: Hello, how may I help you?

Alexander Goldman: magicjack crashed during a call.

Alexander Goldman: I use windows xp

Cartman: I see..

Cartman: Thank you for addressing your concern.

Cartman: May i know when did this issue started.

Alexander Goldman: it happened today

Cartman: May i have your magicjack number please.

Alexander Goldman: 718 705 0625

Cartman: Thanks

Alexander Goldman: also voip error handling not good

Alexander Goldman: in 203 area code, instead of a busy signal, the magicjack just hangs up without a message

Cartman: On your magicJack, click menu and volume/headset control. Can you toggle between telephone and headset there?

Alexander Goldman: I can. but I use computer system sound, not headset

Alexander Goldman: I mean, I use telephone, not headset

Cartman: Okay...

Cartman: Please try connecting your magicJack to a different USB port and try again.

Alexander Goldman: I reconnected it to the same USB port but I have not made a call

Cartman: Please try using a different phone with your magicJack.

Alexander Goldman: i connected to another USB port. why would the phone crash the magicjack. do you have real solutions to this problem or just a script.

Cartman: http://www.speedtest.net

Cartman: Please click the link then click the pyramid of your location.

Cartman: Kindly give me the speed test result of your internet bandwidth both on download and upload speed per kbps.

Cartman: Thanks.

Cartman: Please go to the "Menu" on your magicJack, click "Headset/Volume Control" and lower the volume for both microphone and speakers to about 1/3 of max.

[I pass the test and]

Cartman: Please go to the "Menu" on your magicJack, click "Headset/Volume Control" and lower the volume for both microphone and speakers to about 1/3 max

Alexander Goldman: will this solve problem?

Alexander Goldman: volume is already 1/3 max

They tried to blame my ISP, my PC -- anything but their own service. I hung up.

I won't even try to get the problem of the instant-hangup-on-dial solved or the various other issues with the service. I'm worried that's it's difficult to uninstall.

I will say this, however. Having obtained just over a full year of service for about $60, MagicJack was a bargain for me and for Jupitermedia.

Lately, however, I've been forced to take calls on my home phone, the POTS line, so it's time to change to a more reliable service. I see several possibilities on the GBU list. Do you have any suggestions?

Update 1: MagicJack has contacted me and I will talk to them soon.
